A major home insurance company will stop writing new California home owner insurance policies. Will this make it easier or harder for home owners in the Golden State to save on their coverage? One thing for sure; now is a good time to start shopping.
Why would a major insurance company stop insuring homes in a particular area? California has a higher risk of damage to homes due to earthquakes and wildfires, than a lot of states. That’s the reason this insurance company decided not to insure homes in the state anymore. However, other major companies still do, and according to a May 11, 2007 USA Today article, several of them have cut prices in California. This could create a competitive environment which could be good for the home owner.
It would be worth your time, (it could be worth hundreds of dollars in fact) to spend some time getting comparison home insurance quotes. Not all insurance companies charge the same rate, so you want to get at least three different quotes. Have your current policy in front of you when you ask for quotes, and write down any changes you might want to communicate. For example, if you’ve installed a burglar or fire alarm lately you may be able to get a discount.
When you have this in front of you, it’ll be easier to provide the same information to each company to get the most accurate comparison quote. You can call agents, or even easier, go online and request quotes. One of the most convenient ways to get Internet quotes is to visit a comparison Web site.
At a comparison site, you only have to enter your information once and you’ll get quotes back from several different companies and agents. Also, be sure to see if you get a discount for both your home and auto being insured by the same company. This could save you an additional 5% on your premium.
